Re: Article on ammo for barter
Now that I look at these links, it looks like these articles are the first two in a series.

Re: Article on ammo for barter
In SHTF i would NEVER barter ammo or weapons to strangers. this is akin to giving N Korea military aid. ammo is like food once used, its gone. plus once you swap a weapon or ammo to someone they KNOW you have more and may be back with freinds to get them. I would however swap with members of my group or like minded neighbors to help them out.

Re: Article on ammo for barter
Yep, no ammo out the door except the closest of family and friends...way to many variables for that traded 22lr round to come back and bite you in the ass.
Good luck |
Re: Article on ammo for barter
most of you consider not giving away ammo in barter transactions but would you accept it in a post shtf world?

But if you "sell it" it is much more cut and dry. As other have said : Ammo would only be desiminated to local members of my compound. T |
Re: Article on ammo for barter
The Survivalblog articles were very interesting. I agree. Good reads.
There are more than 76 reasons to carry a gun, in my opinion, but he's go the most ot them. |
Re: Article on ammo for barter
I would hate to barter ammo but I can see situations in which I would do so. If you badly needed a dentist or antibiotics most would trade ammo. If you have a wife or daughter you will, sooner or later, need antibiotics or some kind.
Never say never. |

Re: Article on ammo for barter
I don't place much stock in the "survivalist bartering ammo" line.
There's two problems with it- 1) the ammo's condition isn't really knowable without firing it, and 2) the ammo is not nearly as compact a way to store wealth as precious metals, which is the entire point of using money instead of bartering in the first place. A lot of people on gun boards don't seem to get point #2 at all. As long as a product is made in one location and transported to another for use, the people making and transporting it are going to want a form of easily-portable wealth. Gold wins that contest by a long shot. You can carry $20,000 of gold in your pocket pretty easily, but try carrying the same amount of ammo around for a day. The standard response seems to be "well when Katrina hit New Orleans, gold wouldn't have been good for anything!" but that's selective ignorance. A gun wouldn't have been good for much either--it was a boat that everybody wanted, and nobody who had one would have traded it for ammo, either. The post-event disaster of Katrina didn't last long enough for any kind of trade to emerge; the people were all hauled out elsewhere within three or four days. It's not really evidence of the usefulness of anything regarding barter. -end- |
